FIRST DAY AT WORK LESSON TUTORIAL

INTRODUCTION

This is one of the lessons of a great series of English Teaching Lesson Tutorials developed by UNAD students in teaching degree; the idea with this kind of tutorials is to show how teachers develop language acquisition in students; how to develop cooperative learning and how to include ICT in our teaching.

The blog provides resources in every approach; we work in speaking, listening, reading and writing trough flashcards, practical exercises, and communication strategies that help the student in comprehension skills for real life situations in a natural context.

ICT is very important, we provide audio, video, online research and internet tools as social networks, email, etc., to be sure of our students understanding, this space is also created to share and interact, as teachers, to improve our methodologies and results.

ONLINE ENGLISH LESSONS

TOPIC:                      FIRST DAY AT WORK
TARGET:                  B1 – INTERMEDIATE LEVEL
METHODOLOGY:       COMMUNICATIVE APPROACH
STRATEGY:              COOPERATIVE LEARNING USING ICT AS BASE

Objectives:

·         Students will learn to use language as a means of expression
·         Students will use language as a means of expressing values and judgments.
·         Students will learn to express the functions that best meet their own communication needs.

Sequence of activity:

1.    Prepare a Narrative that reflect natural use of language
2.     Require meaningful use of language
3.    Require the use of communication strategies
4.    Seek to link language use to context

Fluency Tasks:

At first, the teacher will read the Narrative to the students; everyone has a copy of the writing.
After that the students will carry out a role play.  In groups, students now try to create the dialog using language items of their choice. They are asked to recreate what happened preserving the meaning but not necessarily the exact language. They later act out their dialogs in front of the class.

Accuracy Tasks:

  • ·         Students are practicing dialogues; the class is organized in groups of three; two students practicing the dialog, and the third playing the role of monitor.
  • ·         The monitor checks that the others are using the correct intonation pattern and corrects them where necessary.
  • ·         The teacher moves around listening to the groups and correcting their language when necessary.
  • ·         The accuracy activities are important to support fluency activities.

Julian Antonio: It´s pretty good and reasonable too. Next, this hallway is where you can find the bathrooms and the meeting rooms.

José David: This is a big office.

Julian Antonio: It´s big, but we´re almost done. Last, but not least, here is the sales division. There are fourteen of us that share this space, but we each have our own cubicle.
